The smaller Lake 111 Z 2 models 7253Z and 7254Z feature 2.50" blades and are 6.00" long when opened. The larger models 7255Z and 7256Z have 3.125" blades and measure 7.25" overall when opened. We're producing the Lake 111 Z in two sizes. For grip, the handle features a basketweave texture and a pronounced finger choil and pommel. The combination of stainless steel liners and lightweight injection-molded glass-filled nylon scales results in a very rigid frame. The lockback design allows for a very flat build. Dual Lake-style thumb studs give fast either-hand opening, and the lockback release allows easy one-hand closing. Blade steel is premium 8Cr14MoV stainless steel (equivalent to AUS 8).
The blade is a classic drop point with a flat grind for strength and a brushed finish. For those who are concerned about accidental opening, in-pocket or on-belt, simply slide the button forward to lock the knife closed until its next use. When locked open, it is virtually impossible to accidentally release the blade even during vigorous cutting tasks. button forward to lock the blade both in the open and closed positions. Ron's breakthrough is his patented* Lock Back Safety (L.B.S.?) which allows the user to slide the small L.B.S. In this case, we believe he has perfected the lockback folder. But while Ron is busy making stunning custom folders in his Eugene, Oregon, workshop, he is always thinking. His signature style knife was patented in 1974, and he was elected to the Cutlery Hall of Fame in 1998.Ron Lake has been called "the father of the modern folding knife" and literally co-authored the book on them in 1988, How To Make Folding Knives. Ron joined the knifemakers' guild in 1971 and became a full time maker the following year. At that time these design elements were recognized as major advancements in folding knives. Additionally, placing the tab at the end of the lock bar gave the user a mechanical advantage. The design employed a machined metal frame in which the handle material was housed, thus protecting the handle material and making for a stronger knife. Ron's first knives were mostly fixed blade hunting knives, crude by comparison to his work just a few years later, and in 1970 he designed and produced the first ever Tail-Lock "Interframe" folder. In 1965 he set up a small workshop in his garage and started making knives as a hobby in his spare time after work.
He then worked for ten years at a parts manufacturer making prototypes for the aviation and automotive industry. He was first employed as a model/pattern maker in an electrical products manufacturing company where projects included naval sonar equipment. His working career started in 1960 after obtaining a machine tool degree. Labeled by sportswriter B.R Hughes, as the "Father of the Modern Day Folding Knife," Ron Lake has been making knives for over 50 years.
